What Your AC Has Been Through This Summer

Think about what you do after a long road trip. You fill the tank, maybe get an oil change, check the tires. The car earned it. Your AC has been on a road trip since May. From the first real heat of late spring through the stretch of 90-degree weeks that define a South Carolina summer, that system has been running hard, often 12 to 16 hours a day, for months without a break. Homeowners in Myrtle Beach and Charleston know the summer here is genuinely demanding. Here is what that kind of work actually does to the equipment, and why a late-summer check-up is a reasonable thing to do before fall arrives.
The Coils Have Been Working Against Salt and Humidity All Season
The condenser coil on your outdoor unit rejects heat from your home to the outside air. To do that, air has to flow through it freely. Over the course of a summer, dust, pollen, grass clippings, and in a coastal environment, salt deposits accumulate on the fins and reduce airflow. A coil that is even partially restricted has to run longer to move the same amount of heat, which costs you on the electric bill and puts more wear on the compressor.
The evaporator coil inside your air handler faces a different challenge. It collects condensation from the air as part of the dehumidification process, and that moisture creates conditions where mold and biological growth can build up on the coil surface over a long season. A coil in poor condition also freezes more readily, which can cause the system to shut down or run inefficiently.
Neither of these is catastrophic after one summer. But both are things that accumulate gradually and are worth catching while they are still minor.
The Condensate Drain Has Been Working Overtime
Coastal South Carolina humidity means your system pulls significantly more moisture out of the air than a comparable system in a drier climate. All of that condensation has to go somewhere, and it exits through the condensate drain line. Over three or four months of continuous operation, algae grows in that line, and a drain that was clear in May can be partially or fully clogged by August.
A slow drain is not immediately obvious. The water still exits, just more slowly. The problem appears when the drain backs up completely and the overflow fills the drain pan, at which point water ends up somewhere it should not be. We catch this at every service visit by flushing the line and checking the pan. Left unaddressed, it tends to surface at an inconvenient moment, often the first hot day of September when the system is still running hard.
Electrical Connections Loosen Over Time
Every time your compressor starts, there is a brief but real electrical surge through the system. Over thousands of starts across a long season, wire connections at the contactor, capacitor, and disconnect box can work slightly loose from vibration. A loose connection creates resistance, and resistance creates heat, which degrades both the connection and the components around it over time.
This is one of those things you cannot see from the outside and cannot feel in how the system runs until it has progressed. A technician checking and re-torquing connections at the end of the season catches this before it becomes a failure rather than after.
The Capacitor Has Taken a Beating
Capacitors are the components that start the compressor and fan motors. They degrade with each use, and summer heat accelerates that degradation. A capacitor that was measuring within normal range in April may have drifted further toward failure by August after months of daily use in 95-degree heat.
As we covered in our AC tune-up checklist post, a properly equipped technician measures the actual microfarad output of the capacitor and compares it to the rated specification. One that reads 15 to 20 percent below its rated value is heading toward failure. Catching it now, when it is a relatively inexpensive component to replace, beats catching it when it fails completely on a hot September afternoon.
The Fan Motor and Blades Have Logged Serious Hours
The outdoor fan motor runs every time the compressor runs, which in a South Carolina summer means most of the day. Fan motors have bearings that wear over time, and that wear accelerates under sustained load in high heat. A motor that is developing a bearing issue often makes slightly more noise than it used to, or draws slightly more amperage than its rated value.
Fan blades can develop microcracks from vibration and age, particularly on older systems. A blade that develops a stress fracture may run for some time before it fails, but when it does fail it can damage the fan housing, the motor, or both. Inspecting the blades and measuring motor amperage draws as part of a service visit identifies these issues before they become more expensive ones.
South Carolina Stays Hot Through September
Here is the practical argument for doing this now rather than waiting for fall. September in coastal South Carolina is still summer by any real measure. Temperatures regularly reach the upper 80s well into the month, and the humidity does not let go until October at the earliest. A system that develops a problem in September still has weeks of serious work ahead of it.
Scheduling a late-summer check-up in August means any issues that surfaced over the summer get addressed before September's continued heat, and before the fall rush that comes when the first cool snap has everyone calling about heating systems. Early availability, honest pricing, and a visit with no emergency urgency attached to it. That is the better version of the conversation.
What This Visit Should Cover
